SoCal Weimaraner Rescue Participates in GivingTuesday 2025

In the first eleven months of 2025 alone, SoCal Weimaraner Rescue took in almost 60 dogs, averaging 5 per month with 0 months where we didn’t have an intake. This is generally on par with our previous years and does not show any signs of slowing down. We rely on our network of volunteers, fosters and donors to identify and exit dogs from shelters, communicate and coordinate intakes from owner surrenders, secure transportation and foster homes, evaluate dogs, coordinate medical care (as needed), link foster parents with potential adopters, and ensure follow up in each dog's new home. Ultimately through these efforts we can give these dogs their happy ending.

Why Your Donation Matters

Shelters in Crisis with Record Intakes

  • Riverside County shelters have been operating at critically high capacities, with some facilities reaching up to 270% capacity for dogs. The Department of Animal Services has urgently asked for adoptions or fosters to avoid euthanasia due to lack of space. The county has also been operating in a state of emergency due to the influx of animals.
  • Los Angeles Animal Services is facing a "severe overcrowding crisis," with over 900 dogs in custody at one point, pushing healthy, adoptable pets at risk of euthanasia simply due to lack of space. The crisis is linked to factors like the high cost of pet care and a need for improved basic services like spay/neuter programs.
  • San Diego Animal Shelters are severely overcrowded, with the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) struggling at critical capacity due to an influx of surrendered and lost pets. One campus reached 248% capacity, and the high numbers are causing stress and behavioral decline in the animals.

The causes contributing to this regional crisis often cited include:

  • A surge in owner surrenders, often due to the rising cost of living and pet care.
  • The vet shortage and a lack of accessible spay/neuter services, leading to more unplanned litters.
  • Housing restrictions that bar pets, especially large breeds (like our beloved Weimaraners)

How Your Donation Will Be Used

  • Veterinary Care: Covering the costs of vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and treatments for any illness. Many shelters are releasing dogs unaltered, we need to cover the cost once in our care.
  • Foster Care: Supporting our network of foster families who provide temporary homes for rescued Weims. We cover the cost of all food and supplies while a dog is in foster care.
  • Adoption Support: Funding cost of microchipping and behavior training where warranted.
